Summary

Be a changemaker in your local community and join our mission to support local unpaid carers.

Detailed description

Did you know? There are over 20,000 unpaid carers in the Bath and North East Somerset area. This number continues to rise. Due to the pandemic, The Carers’ Centre are helping more than double the number of carers than last year.

Looking after someone can have a significant impact on many areas of a person’s life, physically, emotionally, financially, and more. To ensure the growing number of carers in our local area are recognised, valued and get the help they deserve – we need your help!

What you will do

It can be challenging for a carer to reach out for help, some take years and even decades to access support. It can be difficult to prioritise their own health and wellbeing when they are busy looking after someone else, they often feel misunderstood and they may not know where to turn for support. During the pandemic, we saw local heroes stepping up and making a difference for the vulnerable people in their communities. We do not want this lifeline to disappear for carers.

As a Community Volunteer, you will help engage, educate and motivate local members and residents of your community, including groups, organisations or clubs to ensure carers do not feel alone. You will be finding out what makes your local community tick! Snapping up opportunities to engage with local residents to raise awareness of unpaid care and improve routes to support carers.

About you

You are a trailblazer! You want to take action to help members of your local community. You are eager to learn about unpaid care, and passionate to make a difference. You live in the Bath and North East Somerset area and want to equip local residents with more understanding, so your community can play an active role in supporting carers. Access to a mobile phone, laptop and internet would also be beneficial for this role.

Why join us?

This exciting opportunity is quite unique, you could create long-lasting relationships with your neighbours and other local residents, and you will see the direct impact your efforts have had in your area.

You will be supporting a long-standing local charity and making a huge difference to the lives of carers and your local community.

As part of joining our mission, we pledge to provide you with ongoing support throughout your time with us as a volunteer. You will be provided with a full induction and your voice will be heard. Also we will of course, reimburse any out-of-pocket expenses to support you in your role!

About The Carers' Centre Bath and North East Somerset

We are a local charity dedicated to supporting the thousands of people caring for their loved ones in Bath and the surrounding areas.

We provide trusted information, advice and support to anyone looking after their loved ones in Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES). We help people of all ages and at any stage in their caring role.

We enable people to improve their health and wellbeing by connecting them to others, and by helping them to take control of their caring role. We strive to work with our wider community to improve recognition and support for unpaid carers.

Why we're here:
We are here for the friends and families helping their loved ones get the best out of life.
Looking after a partner, friend or family member due to old age, illness, disability, mental health problem or an addiction can be a very rewarding experience. However, without the right support in place it can take a toll on our physical and mental wellbeing.

What we do:
We work to improve the lives of unpaid carers across B&NES. We do this by supporting carers of all ages to have what they need to stay well, in control and feel connected.

This means listening to carers, amplifying their voices and putting them at the heart of our work. It’s providing free wellbeing activities so they can take some time away from their caring role. It’s helping them navigate a complex health and social care system, offering financial guidance and employment advice. It’s giving them a safe and supportive space to come together.

What we want to achieve:
We’re here for carers, but to be sustainable for the next generation of carers we need to work together.

Three in five of us will care for someone during our lifetime, and it is likely we all know someone who is caring right now. Caring is everybody’s business.

Carers of today and tomorrow need to be recognised, valued and supported by decision-makers, professionals and those around them. We can’t do this without the help of our supporters and volunteers.

Why we need your help:
We are working hard to ensure carers in B&NES are fully recognised, valued and supported in society. But we can’t do this alone.

Volunteers are vital to what we do. They offer their amazing skills to help us deliver life-changing services and they make a huge difference to the local community.

Why volunteer with us?
We want you to get as much out of volunteering as you put into it.
Meeting new friends, learning new skills, advancing your career and feeling happier and healthier; these are just some of the benefits our volunteers say they get from giving their time.

Considering volunteering with us?
Whether you can give the odd hour here or there, or can commit to a more regular role, there are many opportunities to get involved with The Carers’ Centre.
