Summary
Volunteer to Career is a national programme that helps people considering a career in health and care with the opportunity to undertake a volunteer placement.Detailed description
Why we need you
Volunteer to Career is a national programme that helps people considering a career in health and care with the opportunity to undertake a volunteer placement within a healthcare environment to develop their skills and confidence through practical hands-on experience.
St Margarets has a limited number of volunteer placements within our Central Referral Centre and Sunflower Day Hospice for people who are interested in exploring a range of hospice career pathways with a view to applying for paid positions in the health and care sector or applying for courses or to gain accredited qualifications in a healthcare career.
What is Volunteer to Career?
The programme provides a great opportunity for people who might be considering a career in health and care to explore a wide range of careers within the health and care sector as well as develop their skills and confidence through practical hands-on experience.
Volunteers will work as part of the wider multidisciplinary team, helping support the coordination and provision of high-quality hospice care. Volunteers will assist with the facilitation of therapeutic group activities, support treatment programmes, provide low level emotional support and social interaction for patients attending our day hospice. Volunteers will also work alongside our skilled advisors in our busy Central Referral Centre, helping to provide low level guidance and support for patients and their families as well as assist with administration tasks.
What does the programme involve?
Volunteer placements will commence in March 2025 for a period of six months. Successful volunteers will be required to undertake two placements during this period, each placement will be three months in duration. Volunteers will be expected to commit to 1 shift (4 hours) a week. Shift times will be discussed during the interview and agreed prior to a volunteer commencing their placement. Placements are available at both our Taunton and Yeovil hospice hub locations.
Volunteers will be assigned a placement mentor who will provide regular 1:1 guidance and support throughout the Volunteer to Career pathway. Volunteers will also receive a comprehensive induction and ongoing training and development provided by experienced and skilled staff to help introduce volunteers to the work of the hospice
How will I benefit from Volunteer to Career programme?
Through Volunteer to Career, volunteers will be able to explore a range of hospice careers while developing a range of skills and knowledge through practical experience. The programme is a great way to learn more about hospice care and the wide range of services that are provided to patients and their families across Someset. The programme can act as a stepping stone for volunteers to be able to use their experience when applying for paid positions in the health and care sector or applying for courses or to gain accredited qualifications in a healthcare career.
