Detailed description

"Join us as a volunteer to make a difference to children whose parents are separated. Child Contact Centres would not exist without volunteers. NACCC estimates that approximately 4000 work in a voluntary capacity within its Member Centres. A Child Contact Centre is a safe, friendly and neutral place where children of separated families can spend time with one or both parents and sometimes other family members. They are child-centred environments that provide toys, games and facilities that reflect the diverse needs of children affected by family breakdown. There are currently more than 300 Child Contact Centres throughout the British Isles (excluding Scotland). Trained volunteers run the majority of these centres and it is estimated that 15,000 children use them every year. All staff and volunteers are checked by the Criminal Records Bureau prior to starting work at the centre. Volunteers in Child Contact Centres need to be impartial, caring, tolerant, sensitive, flexible, discreet and reliable. They must always put children's needs first and not take sides with either parent or any other adults involved in the contact. More than a million children have no contact whatsoever with one or other parent after separation. Unfortunately, some children experience behavioural issues including antisocial behaviour, distress, unhappiness, and both physical and emotional problems. The NACCC is the only charity in the UK dedicated to solving this problem, by providing safe spaces where children can meet the parents they don't live with. We oversee around 400 contact centres across the UK. Our 'lost parents' campaign aims to raise awareness of the work centres do in keeping children in touch with parents. We consider applications from anyone willing to become our volunteer. All necessary training will be provided free of charge as well as a DBS check."

About Somerset Child Contact Centres (Taunton)

Somerset Child Contact Centres are a non-profit making organisation working to support separated families in Somerset, with centres in Taunton, Chard, Yeovil and Wincanton.

Our main role is to provide a safe place for non-resident parents to spend quality time with their children, which would not otherwise be possible. Referrals are often made following relationship breakdowns, and in most cases referrals are initiated through the courts and family solicitors.

Child Contact Centres are a safe and neutral environment where children of separated families can spend time with one or both parents. They are child centred environments that put the needs of the children first.
The volunteers help to provide invaluable support to setting the scene of positive environment where tensions of children towards the non-resident parents dissolve through playing with the variety of interesting toys, stimulating games, reading, writing/drawing and talking. The tuck shop offers hot drinks to parents (often free of charge) and cold drinks and snacks to children.

Each centre opens twice a month and is staffed by a paid coordinator and a team of volunteers, without whom the centres would not be viable to run.

We are members of NACCC (see above) and adhere to their policies and procedures. You may wish to look at the website for more information about the history and work of Contact Centres:
