About Porlock Vale CIC

Porlock Vale CIC are looking to expand their recently established Good Neighbour Scheme. Covering the Porlock Vale area of Exmoor in West Somerset.
Porlock Vale encompasses Porlock and the surrounding villages of Porlock Weir, West Porlock, Luccombe, Wootton Courtenay, Bossington, Horner, Allerford, Tivington, Selworthy, Culbone and Oare. Porlock has the most aged population in England and is located in the topmost 30% deprived areas in the UK. We are considered to be in a remote, rural location with a lack of public transport and with the lowest social mobility. Around 30% of our residents live alone.
We arrange events to connect people and to reduce isolation and collaborate with local organisation and statutory bodies to represent our residential and business community. We believe in strengthening our community from within.
Porlock Vale community thrives on our neighbourly and community spirit, and we know from initiating, setting up and running the Covid Helpline in 2020, that Porlock Vale steps up to look after its own. In December 2024, Storm Darragh highlighted how much we rely on electricity and modern technology for information and communication and the loss of both proved challenging for us all.
In recent years, new residents have moved into the Vale and due to our demographics and people needing temporary help, Porlock Vale CIC has launched a Good Neighbour Scheme. This scheme aims to assist members of the community who have no family or friends available and who are temporarily in need of some emergency support on a short-term basis.
Could you spare a few hours, each week, month or on a one-off basis? We have vulnerable people within our community of Porlock Vale who might be facing an isolating and scary time. Our current volunteers have found their time volunteering to be very rewarding. You may be wishing to give something back to the community or are planning a change of career and are seeking voluntary work to build your current CV
Your help could be a lifeline for some who do not have immediate family or friends to help them. All volunteers will be required to be in possession of an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) which we will arrange for you. This is a legal requirement for all volunteers engaged in this type of project and is designed to protect the client as well as the volunteer. There is no charge to the Volunteer for this as we cover all costs incurred. A Full Driving License will be required.
