Detailed description
Let’s street perform & raise awareness for young people’s issues with YMCA Mendip & South Somerset @ ‘Belong, Contribute and Thrive Tour’.
YMCA Mendip & South Somerset seek to help young people in your community and wants to continue being active and making a difference to vulnerable young people’s lives, by sharing and speaking out that: ‘Everyone deserves a second opportunity!’ To do this we are launching a new exciting project: ‘Belong, Contribute and Thrive Tour’. We will be attending the main towns and villages in Mendip & South Somerset throughout 2019. YMCA Staff will be present offering information and advice.
We are currently in the process of setting up a team that will stage short street performances to introduce our work and boost the message. The performance will be based on real life case studies of young people who have stayed at Mendip and South Somerset YMCA.
We are looking for really enthusiastic, passionate and committed people who want to join our team of performers.
We are so excited that Joanna Procter has decided to join us to direct the artistic training. Joanna has been a Social & Community Theatre facilitator for over thirty years. Joanna has directed professional theatrical productions in London, Grenoble, Edinburgh, Milan, and Paris, amongst other places. She began her conventional theatre career working with the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber, French and Saunders, and Phillip Pullman; but her personal experience of overcoming the effects of trauma led her towards Social & Community Theatre. Joanna works with individuals and communities who have endured suffering and abuse, and helps them find their voice in order to resolve their issues. This has become her life’s work.
What will I be doing?
Join the YMCA ‘Belong, Contribute and Thrive Tour’ team means becoming a vital part of a group where each member’s work is essential to the delivery of the whole project. You will be asked to:

What we will provide to volunteers
🤝 Extra supportAbout YMCA Mendip (including YMCA South Somerset)
YMCA Mendip has been operating from Wells since 1892 and we now deliver and support a wide range of services, mostly for young people, across the whole of Mendip and also in South Somerset. We’re a fully autonomous independent local charity working for the people of Mendip and South Somerset with a main focus on young people and specialising in housing and homelessness issues.
YMCA Mendip support young people aged 16-25, who are homeless or threatened with homelessness, with supported housing projects, Grace Harris House (Shepton Mallet), Frome Foyer, Street Foyer and new projects in Yeovil. We also have supported accommodation for homeless adults in Spencer House (Wells). We support homeless people and those at risk of homelessness to access private rented accommodation and to maintain their tenancies once housed.
In addition to this YMCA Mendip provides youth clubs and drop ins across Mendip and more recently in Yeovil too. These include Routes Drop in Centre and Café in Frome, Frome Youth and Community Centre providing a range of services to the community and young people and Street Young Peoples Centre, a hub of services for young people. We have Youth Clubs at Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Frome, Yeovil and Coleford.
Volunteers enable us to further enrich the work we do with young people and vulnerable adults, for which we are extremely grateful. If you decide to apply you will be making a real difference to our mission to respond to young peoples’ needs, particularly in terms of homelessness and housing.
Although we are part of the worldwide YMCA movement we are self-funded and grateful to the many people and voluntary groups that help us with contributions and donations (and their time) as well as our partners with whom we have contracts.
