Become a Reader Leader! Run a shared reading group in Somerset. The Reader is a national charity that runs shared reading groups in community settings. Shared Reading brings books, stories and poems to life through reading aloud and group discussion. The Reader is looking for new people in Somerset libraries to train to lead Shared Reading groups locally. Volunteers receive a transformative training course, plus an ongoing support package. Our Somerset volunteers get together for a meeting about 4 times per year, to share ideas and experiences. Volunteers will be encouraged to attract people to the group through putting up posters and visiting local organisations. There is a small amount of preparatory work for each weekly session. www.thereader.org.uk This is a rewarding opportunity to encourage community engagement and combat social isolation. It is great to see people’s confidence and enjoyment grow as they attend the groups. You will also develop skills of reading confidently aloud and steering discussions, which could be valuable in a work role. Groups normally run once a week and last for about 1.5 hours. The day and time can be agreed between the volunteer and the library. There will be a 3 day training course, then the weekly commitment of 1.5 hours.

About The Reader

We are a national charity and a growing movement of 1000 volunteers and partners. We bring together thousands of people each week to share great literature in the form of short stories and poems. We read with schools, families and looked-after children, adults in community spaces, people in care homes, people with physical and mental health conditions, those coping with or recovering from addiction and people in the criminal justice system.
