Summary
Helping people with learning difficultiesDetailed description
This group runs on a Tuesday, 9.30am to 3:00pm, but the role could be from 9.30am to 12:30pm, or from 1pm to 3:00pm if you can’t make all day. The role involves assisting someone with learning disabilities so that they can create garden ornaments - willow weaving and other ornaments for the garden which will be sold in the garden shop.
The group enjoy each other’s company and welcome volunteers as part of their group. As a volunteer, you will need to be DBS checked beforehand (carried out by us) but you don’t need to know anything about gardening. It would be useful if you had experience of working with people with learning disabilities – but it’s not essential. The activities change through the year but are always out in the garden or in the warm greenhouse or workroom. Some activities are garden based but you don't need to have any gardening knowledge at all.
The Growing Space is a charity that runs horticultural therapy and eco therapy sessions for people with learning difficulties but also for people experiencing mental health difficulties. They use the gardens that surround another charity, The Balsam Centre, and the two charities work closely together to provide well being activities for people in the community.
