Your ability to listen, understand and negotiate both with landowners and local authorities will help to further the feasibility of this project.

Having some experience of working either in or with local authorities will be helpful, though not essential.

You will have

  • good negotiating and writing skills
  • be able to manage your own time effectively and
  • be prepared to knock on doors to chat in person with landowners.

Everyone who works at the Somerset Rail to Trail Project is a volunteer and started out with no prior experience of trailways. As long as you are prepared to learn along the way, your proactivity and enthusiasm is 90% of what we need.

As we come out of lockdown, we hope to have more meetings in person. However, digital communication has enabled us to recruit team members from across Somerset which is helpful as the proposed route is approximately 60kms long!

We ask for a minimum commitment of 4 hours per week, though if you have the time and the inclination, more is always appreciated. Your commitment could have a long lasting positive impact on the community at large and we hope will be very rewarding.
