Detailed description
Somerset Libraries are looking for volunteers to help us run Space Chase, Summer Reading Challenge 2019.
What’s it all about?
The Summer Reading Challenge is a national event produced by the Reading Agency and held across libraries in the UK during the school summer holidays. Children sign up at their local library, then read six library books of their choice to complete the challenge. There are exclusive rewards to collect along the way, as well as a host of fun activities and events, and it’s FREE to take part!
How can you help?
Last year, over 7,400 children took part in the challenge in Somerset and we couldn’t do that without the help of volunteers.
Volunteers help us with the challenge by signing up children when they come into the library, giving out rewards for reading books, talking to children about the books they have read, helping them choose their next book, and helping to run craft activities.
What type of person are we looking for?
We are looking for volunteers aged 13 or over who enjoy reading and would like to share their love of reading with others.
You don’t need to have any particular skills, but some of the following might be helpful:
Enjoy working with children
Enjoy talking to others
Organised
Creative (we are always looking for new craft ideas and book displays!)
Happy to read on their own during quiet periods
This is an ideal opportunity for a young person wanting to gain voluntary experience or an adult who simply wants to share their love of reading and support their local library.
When do you need to be free?
The Summer Reading Challenge runs from the 13th July to the 7th September and we are looking for volunteers who can regularly volunteer during that period. We can be flexible with which days, but we are ideally looking for someone who can give at least half a day a week. Short holidays can be worked around.
Where do we need volunteers?
We need volunteers in all of our 32 libraries!
How do I apply to take part?
If you would like to take part, please complete the online application form. The closing date for applying is the 22nd June.
A member of staff will get in touch with you to arrange a time to come in for an informal discussion. These will take place between the 10th and 29h June.
Successful applicants will be informed as soon as possible after their informal discussion.
