About Read Easy Central Somerset

Read Easy UK is a charity providing a volunteer-led programme that teaches adults to read, free of charge, on a confidential one-to-one basis. In Somerset alone, over 17,000 adults are estimated to struggle with reading. (Skills for Life Survey, 2011,Dept.BIS). This can make it extremely challenging to carry out every day tasks such as food shopping, using a cash point, reading a bus timetable, or understanding health information and warnings. By helping people to improve their reading, Read Easy also helps them to improve their employment opportunities. It enables parents and grandparents to read to their children and grandchildren and support their education. Learning to read hugely increases a person's confidence, enabling them to play a more active part in their community and in society as a whole.
With a number of highly successful Read Easy groups already established in Somerset, we are now in the process of setting up a new Read Easy Group for Central Somerset, to reach the areas that are not already covered.
