Supporting the planning and delivery of free, welcoming English lessons for ESOL learners across the Bath community
The Museum of East Asian Art is developing a new community English Language Support Programme in Bath, designed to support adult learners in building confidence, connection, and practical communication skills in English.
We are looking for warm, reliable, and community-minded volunteers to help deliver a welcoming and engaging learning environment. Whether you have experience teaching English or simply feel confident supporting conversation in a thoughtful and inclusive way, we would love to hear from you.
About the Programme
This initiative combines structured and informal learning to create a supportive and consistent learner journey:
- Structured sessions introduce practical English around everyday themes (e.g. navigating the city, social interaction, engaging with culture)
- Informal sessions take place in community settings across Bath (in museums, parks, and cafés), where learners can practise English in real-life contexts
- Sessions are organised into small, consistent groups, helping participants build confidence over time
The programme also places strong emphasis on cultural exchange, particularly engaging with East and Southeast Asian communities represented in our collection.
The Role of Volunteers
As a volunteer, you may:
- Facilitate small-group conversations, helping learners practise speaking in a relaxed and supportive setting
- Support structured learning sessions, reinforcing key vocabulary and themes
- Use simple conversation prompts and activities to encourage participation
- Help create an inclusive environment where all learners feel comfortable contributing
- (Optional) Lead short guided walks or museum-based sessions, using the local environment as a conversation tool
You will be supported with so that you can feel confident in your role, but if you are interested in helping with the structured lessons, some experience with language teaching/tutoring would be necessary.
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome applications from people who:
- Are confident English speakers
- Have an interest in supporting language learning and community engagement
- Are patient, encouraging, and able to work with people from diverse backgrounds
- Can commit to attending sessions consistently (monthly) to help build continuity for learners
Experience in teaching, tutoring, or facilitating groups is highly valued, but for involvement with the informal sessions it is not essential. We are particularly keen to hear from individuals with connections to East and Southeast Asian communities, in line with the museum’s mission and collection.
What You’ll Gain
- Experience supporting a community-based learning programme
- Opportunities to develop facilitation and communication skills
- The chance to contribute to a welcoming, culturally rich environment
- Being part of a project that supports confidence, connection, and inclusion in the local community
If you’re interested in being part of a thoughtful, evolving programme that values both language learning and cultural exchange, we would be delighted to hear from you.
