Detailed description

We are looking for more wonderful friendly volunteers to facilitate our expanding service to befriend older people on a one to one basis across Mendip. Our Volunteer Befrienders help improve the quality of life older people who are socially isolated and may feel lonely and we would be delighted if you wish to join our team.


We have one to one befriending opportunities in Shepton Mallet to visit our members by popping in for cuppa, going out for a cuppa or simply a leisurely walk around the block.


You will introduced to a member with the purpose of spending an hour or two each visit to bring friendship, company, and a chance to chat. As part of the visit there may be a practical purpose, such as reading a newspaper to a visually impaired person, or accompanying the service user shopping or include a recreational activity.


The aim of our befriending services are to support and encourage our member to maintain access to services and facilities within the community they live in, and most of all have fun.

As a volunteer MHA will provide you with:

  • A full induction for the role;
  • Training on safeguarding, health and safety and other training relevant to the role
  • Ongoing support from a the Communities manager;
  • Out of pocket expenses in accordance with MHA’s Expenses Policy.

 

Times and Commitment

  • We ask that you make a minimum of six months commitment to this role;
  • We ask you to be able to spend 1 to 2 hours with an older person each visit.
  • We ask that you visit weekly or fortnightly, and we will agree this with you
