Summary

Due to the retirement of the previous Treasurer we are seeking an enthusiastic, energetic person to help celebrate our heritage and drive the museums strategy

Detailed description

The museum is run by The Axbridge and District Museum Trust, led by 7 Trustees alongside a group of dedicated local volunteers and the building is owned by the National Trust. The museum is particularly popular with families and is a key destination for many school visits throughout the year.

The museum is staffed entirely by volunteers. We are therefore dependent on revenue from donations and gift shop sales to cover our running costs.

We need an individual with a passion for heritage and the energy to drive the museum forward. We anticipate the Treasurer would join our Trustees and other officers at a monthly board meeting. We all play an active role in the various operational aspects of running the museum. These include fund-raising, recruiting and organising our volunteer teams, promoting the museum, leading education visits and facilities management.

Responsibilities of the Museum Treasurer include:

·         Ensure proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are controlled, invested and economically spent in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements.

·         Review reserves policy and safeguard finances.

·         Providing leadership and advice to the board of Trustees on financial matters and helping the board fulfil its responsibilities for the financial governance and direction of the organisation.

·         Work in partnership with Trustees on all financial matters, ensuring the completion of key financial documents.

·         Oversee planning/budgeting processes in participation with the Board and constructively challenge when necessary.

·         To prepare the annual accounts.

·         Guide and advise trustees to formally approve the annual report and audited accounts.

·         To be one of the authorised bank signatories for the museum and where necessary, authorise payments according to the museum’s finance policy.

The role is mainly home-based (online) with most meetings in the evening, in person, in Axbridge. The expected hours will vary between 1 to 4 hours per week with a flexible working arrangement. The position is unpaid, although the Trustees may consider an Honoraria payment to show their appreciation of a job well done. Expenses incurred in undertaking the role will be reimbursed.

A competent treasurer or part-qualified bookkeeper or accountant would be ideal. Experience in the charity field is helpful but not essential.
