About Bridgwater & District Friends of Cancer Research UK

A small thriving group of local volunteers dedicated to raising money for a great cause. We cover the district of Sedgemoor and the town of Bridgwater in Somerset. Our committee meet one evening a month and organise functions and collections which raise money to fund research.

Formed in 1979 by two ladies; Doris Baker and Kirsty Baker (not related).
The main purpose of the group is to raise funds for Cancer Research UK whilst having fun.

Since the group was formed we have raised over £900,000.

We have been the proud recipients of the charity's Flame of hope awards in 2010 & 2017; which are given to exceptional volunteers who have shown great dedication.

In 2014 Keith and Carol Fishlock also received a fellowship Flame of hope award and Our chairman Gavin has received two commendations in the field of volunteering.

We run a wide range of activities including a fashion shop; dog show; prize bingo and race nights as well as street and supermarket collections. Our volunteers also support the 'Race for Life team' and other local running club events as flower sellers or marshals.

in addition to these smaller events we also organise some larger scale events such as 'The Great Somerset Duck Race'; The Bridgwater half marathon (including a 10K & 5K) and more recently 'Music by the lakes' .

We are always looking for volunteers who can give a little time. Our volunteers can do as little and much as they wish.
