Activities Coordinator for a monthly drop in centre for people living with dementia in the community

Wells Memory Cafe is a monthly drop in at Wells Methodist Church Hall on the 3rd Wednesday of each month 2-30pm. It was set up by Wells Dementia Action Alliance which provides the ongoing supervision and support to the small team of volunteers.

Activities:

There is a range of activities which include: regular music sessions (including live musicians and singing) quizzes, various reminiscence activities, exercise sessions, conversation stimulated by pictures or topic cards, board games, colouring, puzzles, bowling.

At sessions where games/discussion are planned, the Café makes available publications from Age UK, Alzheimer’s Society and organisations offering services nationally and locally. They can all be taken away.

The Memory Café holds the WDAA book collection.

Purpose of the group:

The Café is a safe space which provides an informal social opportunity for people with memory problems and those who care for them. It offers signposting, information and advice from those with lived experience, professionals and publications to take away. It enables those who attend to meet others in a similar position to them, to form friendships and feel less isolated.

Target audience:                                                                                                                                                 Anyone who is worried about their memory can attend the group. If they live alone, they can attend alone. If they live with a family member they should attend with a carer, unpaid or paid. The café does not offer respite or personal care.

The group is currently made up of people over retirement age. The activities are geared to this age group but we’d welcome anyone with Young On-set Dementia if they expressed an interest. In these circumstances the activities would need to change.

Professionals from the NHS, Somerset Council Social Services and others eg Alzheimer’s Society and providers of appropriate services attend by invitation or drop in if they are already known to the organiser.
