About the Organisation:
The Taunton Sea & Royal Marines Cadets (TS Roebuck) is a registered youth development charity (No. 295097) based inside Norton Manor Camp. We offer young people aged 10–18 a chance to excel through maritime-themed adventure, discipline, and community action. To keep providing these life-changing opportunities, we rely entirely on an enthusiastic and safe team of adult volunteers.
Volunteering Options (Uniformed and Non-Uniformed):
We offer two distinct pathways for our instructional staff, allowing you to choose the style of volunteering that best suits your preferences:
* Uniformed Instructors: Wear the official Sea Cadet Corps or Royal Marines Cadet uniform, helping to uphold the traditions, drills, and formal structure of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
* Non-Uniformed Civilian Instructors: Deliver essential training, sports, and mentorship in comfortable civilian attire or unit clothing, without participating in the military drill or uniform aspects of the organisation.
What You Will Be Doing (Role Responsibilities):
Your involvement can be tailored entirely to your interests and skills. Core tasks include:
* Instructional Training: Guiding cadets through the national training syllabus during our weekly parade nights. This covers practical modules such as first aid, navigation, campcraft, cooking, or engineering.
* Watersports & Outdoor Adventure: Assisting with or instructing water-based training (sailing, rowing, canoeing, kayaking, or powerboating) on local waterways during the spring and summer, or supporting land-based camping and hiking trips.
* Unit Management: If you prefer a non-instructional support role, you can join our Unit Management Team (UMT) to help manage local fundraising, safety logs, equipment maintenance, or administration.
What Qualifications and Skills Do You Need?
* Prior Experience: None required. You do not need a background in the military or the maritime industry to apply. We provide a full, structured adult induction framework for both civilian and uniformed pathways.
* Personal Attributes: We value reliability, a positive attitude, patience, and a genuine passion for supporting youth development in Somerset.
The Benefits (What’s In It For You?):
Volunteering with us is a highly rewarding investment in your own personal and professional growth:
* Free National Qualifications: Access to the nationally recognised training through the Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC). You can earn official coaching and instructor certificates from governing bodies like the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and British Canoeing.
* Career Development: Stand out to employers by demonstrating hands-on experience in risk management, team leadership, and volunteer coordination.
* Community Connection: Become part of a supportive, historic volunteer network that actively shapes the civic pride of Taunton.
Commitment & Safeguarding Requirements:
* Time Commitment: Ideally, we look for volunteers who can attend one or both of our evening parades (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:45pm – 9:15pm). Occasional weekend availability for summer watersports sessions or training camps is optional but highly valued.
* Safeguarding & Security: Because our unit meets inside a secure military installation (Norton Manor Camp) and works closely with minors, all successful applicants must clear a mandatory Enhanced DBS Check, which our unit fully coordinates and funds.
