A Community Champion will already support people in their local community, and will use this role to share with us what you hear about the maternity services.

What is a Community Champion?

A Community Champion is someone who work with pregnant people, new parents or families in their local community.

You might:

  • Already run a regular baby or toddler group, or be setting one up
  • Have a local business where you see new parents or pregnant people regularly and hear what they have to say  (some examples: being a doula, running antenatal classes or running a photography studio
  • Work for a charity
  • Help in a community or cultural group
  • Manage a Facebook group
  • or support families in another way
  • Run a baby or toddler group
  • Support breastfeeding families

People trust you and feel comfortable talking to you. This means they may share their experiences of pregnancy care or their birth stories with you.

As a Community Champion, you can help make sure these experiences are heard and then shared anonymously to improve maternity and neonatal services in Somerset.

You could:

  • Tell people about the Somerset MNVP
  • Share our information and resources (which we can provide you with!)
  • Share our social media posts or posters
  • Encourage them to contact us
  • Listen to people's experiences
  • Share feedback and themes you are hearing with us
  • Invite us to events and groups you are running

Who are Somerset MNVP?

Somerset Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP) are a small team of employed people and volunteers who listen to families' experiences of maternity and neonatal care in Somerset.

We work closely with the Somerset Foundation NHS Trust to share what we are hearing to improve care, but we are completely independent and are hosted by Evolving Communities CIC.

We:

  • Listen to families
  • Make sure their voices are heard
  • Share feedback with local services
  • Help improve care for women, birthing people, babies, and families
  • Try to hear from people from all backgrounds and communities

We especially welcome people who can help us hear from communities whose voices are not always heard or who are under-served by maternity and neonatal services.

What would you do?

This role is flexible! If you are already working in the community and hearing feedback from families the only extra time would be sharing what you are hearing with us!

You can do this by:

  • Completing our anonymous feedback form (10-15 minutes)
  • Email us with what themes you are hearing
  • Have a call with Tamara, our Equity and Insights Lead

What skills do you need?

We are looking for people who:

  • Enjoy talking to others
  • Want to help people be heard
  • Are kind and respectful
  • Value other people's experiences
  • Are able to send us feedback and themes when it works for them!

You do not need any special qualifications!

What are the benefits?

As a Community Champion, you can:

  • Help to improve services by sharing feedback from families
  • Support families in your community
  • Meet and work with others who want to make a difference
  • Get involved in other MNVP activities

Support provided! We want to hear from families all over Somerset so please do get in touch - we are a friendly and inclusive team
