Summary

Do you want to help support tourism and walking? This could be for you!

Detailed description

There are several trails in Somerset that are promoted by the County Council to support local businesses and encourage tourism in the County. To make sure these trails provide amazing experiences for locals and visitors, we are looking for volunteers to watch the trails, let us know of any issues, and help us identify opportunities to make these trails even better!

Being a Rights of Way volunteer is great for those who love the outdoors and want to help other people explore the joys of our amazing network. There are 6 trails that are currently promoted by the Rights of Way team – there are loads of opportunities to get involved.

The promoted trails are divided up into sections of various length and you can choose from the available sections to ensure your volunteering can fit around your other commitments. If there are other volunteers in your area or volunteering on the same trail, there may be opportunities to meet new people too.

When you sign up for this role, you will receive a map or directional guide for your section of trail and can request some gloves and secateurs to help you keep your adopted section clear. There is an online induction to complete and other optional eLearning available if you want to find out more about the council, volunteering and Rights of Way. We are currently developing a guide for how to report back to us the status of your section of trail – it’s an exciting time to get involved and help to develop this!

As part of this role, you are expected to:

  • Regularly walk your chosen section(s)
  • Respond to survey requests and information about your experiences on your section of trail
  • Carry out light cutting back of vegetation from around gates, gapes, stiles, fingerposts etc
  • Promote responsible experiences in the countryside by following the Countryside Code
  • Report issues via the Explore Somerset Map
  • Record the hours you spend volunteering

All the volunteering roles are supported by the Rights of Way Volunteer and Trails Officer who is always happy to help and produces a quarterly newsletter you can choose to receive.

Opportunities vary across the county. Please register your interest to find out what is available in your local area.
