We want volunteers to help with habitat management and site maintenance work at a local nature reserve or other managed wildlife site.
Volunteers are needed to help with habitat management and site maintenance Ham Hill Country Park.
Ham Hill is 170 million years in the making, offering fantastic views across the South Somerset Levels to the Mendips, Exmoor and beyond. Ham Hill is a stunning wildlife haven centred around an Iron Age hillfort, it is a nationally important Historic Monument and one of the largest Iron Age hillforts in the UK. As well as the 88.1 hectare Scheduled Ancient Monument, it has beautiful wildflower meadows, spectacular wildlife, fascinating geology and striking Iron Age rampart archaeology. Ham Hill offers fantastic opportunities for scenic dog walks, walking, running, playing and wildlife watching with far reaching views across Somerset.
You'll learn habitat management techniques, safe use of tools and practical site maintenance techniques. You'll be volunteering as part of team, supervised by a member of the Somerset Council ranger team. Tasks include litter picking, tree planting, coppicing, scrub clearance, fencing, path maintenance works, working in or around water courses.
Depending on your experience and ability, you may be offered opportunities for more training such as ATV driving, brush cutter or operation of a brushwood chipper.
You don't need to have to have any previous skills or knowledge, but you do need to be able to carry out physical tasks on uneven terrain in various weather conditions throughout the year.
All training and tools are provided.
