Octagon Theatre Buddies

We are looking for volunteers to be an important and valued part of our Arts Engagement & Outreach programme at the Octagon Theatre & Westlands Entertainment Venue. Volunteering at The Octagon Theatre & Westlands Entertainment Venue as an Octagon Buddy will provide rewarding and enjoyable experiences supporting patrons that might not feel confident in coming to the theatre alone, haven’t been before or don’t know what to expect and need a little additional support.

Our Octagon Buddies will act as companions and advocates for our patrons, supporting people to experience the theatre and set foot in our venues, who without this support would not have done so previously.

Our Octagon Buddies will be called upon when we receive a request for a buddy by a member of the public, who will then have the opportunity to volunteer if available. Our trained Octagon Buddies will then be paired with a patron who has bought a ticket for an event but would like some support whilst attending. Your ticket to shows and events will be provided free of charge when you are volunteering, we are simply asking for your time and commitment to the project.

What you will be doing

• Act as a companion for individuals experiencing anxiety about attending shows and events alone or for the first time visiting
• Meet a patron in the venue and accompany them to a performance/event at the Octagon & Westlands
• Show the individual they are supporting around the venue, including showing them the toilets, where to buy merchandise and refreshments
• Chat to the individual before the show, during the interval and after the show

The skills you need

• Have good communication skills
• Be willing to take part in the activities
• Be willing to encourage, support and help audience members
• Excellent customer service and approachable manner
