Summary

Have a favourite walk or looking to explore your local area? This could be the role for you!

Detailed description

The Rights of Way Team are looking for people to regularly walk their local, or their favourite Rights of Way, cutting back minor overgrowth and allowing more people to enjoy their rights and get out exploring!

Being a Rights of Way volunteer is great for those who love the outdoors and want to help other people explore the joys of our amazing network. There are over 6100 kilometres of Rights of Way in the county – there are loads of opportunities to get involved.

All our roles are designed to be flexible to fit around your schedule. There is no minimum or maximum number of Rights you can adopt and if you ever want to change them, just let the Volunteer and Trails Officer know. If there are other volunteers in your area, there may be opportunities to meet new people too.

When you sign up for this role, you will receive a map of your adopted path(s) and can request some gloves and secateurs to help you keep your adopted path(s) clear. There is an online induction to complete and other optional eLearning available if you want to find out more about the council, volunteering and Rights of Way.

As part of this role, you are expected to:

  • Regularly walk your chosen path(s)
  • Carry out light cutting back of vegetation from around gates, gapes, stiles, fingerposts etc
  • Promote responsible experiences in the countryside by following the Countryside Code
  • Report issues via the Explore Somerset Map
  • Record the hours you spend volunteering

All the volunteering roles are supported by the Rights of Way Volunteer and Trails Officer who is always happy to help and produces a quarterly newsletter you can choose to receive.

Opportunities vary across the county. Please register your interest to find out what is available in your local area.
