Schoolreaders is a national children's literacy charity that is looking for volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read.

Schoolreaders find and match volunteers with local primary schools to support children in improving their reading and comprehension skills, as well as developing their confidence and social skills. Our service to schools is totally free!

Volunteers visit their matched school once a week for an hour or two during the school day where they work individually with children to help improve their reading ability and also their enjoyment of reading. Research shows that fewer and fewer children are reading for pleasure so volunteers spending 1:1 time with a child to enjoy books together is invaluable.  Often our volunteers read with children who need extra support or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom.

Our volunteers tell us their visits to schools are often the highlight of their week. Indeed, lots of volunteers become invaluable members of the school community itself.

Volunteers need to be over 18, have a good level of written and spoken English and enjoy spending time with children.

Our volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of one hour each week for a full year during term time (although holidays can of course be taken) and will undergo an Enhanced DBS check, which is organised by the school.

About Schoolreaders

Volunteers needed to listen to children read!

One in four children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard. This means they are unable to fully access their secondary education which will have a life-long impact on their opportunities.

Schoolreaders is a national child literacy charity that recruits volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read. We are calling out for more volunteers across Somerset. If you can spare just an hour a week, you could change a child’s life story.
