Volunteer on board our 'City at Sea' lift, helping visitors explore our aircraft carrier experience and discover what life was like aboard a Royal Navy ship.

Linking Navy to Nation with inspiring stories and experiences. Here at Royal Navy Museums you can come aboard the most famous ships, planes, and submarines of the Royal Navy and experience them through the stories of the people who served on them. As well as being truly captivated by the thousands of unique, emotional, and sometimes quirky stories that have shaped the Royal Navy into what it proudly stands for today. You are pivotal in us achieving our vision, and to support this, we embrace diversity and want everyone to feel valued and have a sense of belonging.

This is a great opportunity to join the Volunteer team at Royal Navy Museums: Naval Aviation (formerly Fleet Air Arm Museum).

We are recruiting volunteers who can help our visitors board our aircraft carrier exhibit and travel in our ‘City at Sea’ lift, taking visitors on a journey through the decks of the ship.  As one of our site’s main attractions, our ‘City at Sea,’ defines the aircraft carrier in terms of the vital part it plays in Royal Navy operations - it can go anywhere in the world, and so can its aircraft.

Within the lift, visitors encounter three virtual crew members from different parts of the ship, telling stories and giving members of the public an immersive glimpse into life on board an aircraft carrier.

We are excited to offer this new volunteer position, which will add value to our visitor journey, especially during busy times aboard our ‘City at Sea’ lift experience. Whether it’s engaging with the public, or advising on orientation, volunteers can play a huge role in delighting our visitors and ensuring they get the most from a visit to the Museum.

Knowledge of Royal Naval Service and the Fleet Air Arm is useful, but not essential.

The role supports the Visitor Experience Team Member who operates the experience lift. Our ‘City at Sea’ lift experience runs daily following the museum’s opening timetable. During Somerset school holidays we are open every day. Outside of holidays, we are open Wednesday - Sunday, and closed to the public on Mondays and Tuesdays.

What you can bring:

  • Ability to engage with the public
  • Share  knowledge and experiences
  • Help answer queries
  • Going that extra step further to surprise and delight with knowledge of the Royal Navy aviation story and current exhibits.

 What we offer:

  • The opportunity to be part of a friendly and diverse workplace within a unique heritage environment.
  • Free admission to other national museums and attractions within the reciprocal agreement.
  • Discounts at our shops and cafes.
  • Free and discounted tickets for family and friends.
  • On-site training to help assist you in your volunteer role.

If your application is successful, you will be invited in for an informal interview where we will be able to learn more about you, your skills and interests, as well as provide an opportunity for you to ask questions and find out more information about the role. An induction and relevant training will be provided for those who join the team.

If you are interested in volunteering in this role, please submit your expression of interest. To register your interest, or if you have any questions or require further information, please ask us a question.
