We’re looking for a friendly woman based in Chard with a keen interest in gardening to support our allotment patch for refugee and newcomer women 🌱

This year, we had lots of success sharing English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) with refugee women arriving to Somerset through community activities - conversation groups, swimming lessons, creative writing classes, exercise sessions and book groups. As part of this project we took on an allotment space in Chard, where English-practice opportunities are not easily available. You can read about the “Language, Belonging and Women in Action” Programme online.

We are looking for someone to connect with visitors to the allotment from Portugal, Angola, Ukraine and Latvia, to support simple gardening activities and create an easy atmosphere for English language exchange. This would be someone interested in gardening, curious about other cultures and keen to connect with a diverse group of women. They would be ready to communicate with the group via WhatsApp and run short sessions, either taking care of existing plants or planting new ones, with the women’s group.

If you are interested, please get in touch! We’d love to hear from you  🌱

Note on DBS: this is required but can be arranged by us.

About Kitabna - Our Book CIC

Our organisation shares creative writing teaching and multi-lingual books with communities affected by conflict and disaster. Since 2014, we have created several children’s books with refugee communities, in multiple languages, across the Middle East, North Africa, the Caucasus, Europe and the UK. We have worked with the United Nations, Save the Children and the UK government, and now have a creative writing toolkit available for anyone to use with the communities they support!
