Summary

Are you looking to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life? Do you have a little time to spare each week? Volunteer as a Befriender today!

Detailed description

What does a befriender do? Our befriending service connects volunteers with older individuals in need of companionship. As a volunteer befriender, you could:

  • Visit an older person in their home for a friendly chat and a cup of tea
  • Accompany them to local activities, such as a café or the theatre
  • Provide support on occasional trips to doctor’s or hospital appointments
  • Offer friendship over the phone for those who prefer remote conversations

What’s in it for you?

  • The rewarding experience of making a positive impact on someone’s life
  • Flexible commitment—just a small amount of your time each week can make a big difference
  • The chance to build connections and give back to your community

Whether you're young or old, a little companionship can go a long way in brightening someone’s day. Join us at Age UK in our mission to combat loneliness and bring joy to those who need it most.

About Age UK Banes

Age UK Bath & North East Somerset is a local charity dedicated to improving the lives of older people in our community. We provide essential services and activities that promote independence, well-being, and social connection, ensuring that older adults feel valued and supported.

Thank you for considering volunteering with us! Your time and effort can make a real difference, whether you’re offering companionship, sharing skills, or helping to run our activities. We have a variety of roles to suit different interests, including:

Befriending – Providing regular companionship to help combat loneliness.

Digital Champion – Supporting older people in gaining confidence with technology.

Memory Group Helper – Assisting with our dementia-friendly sessions.

Atrium Connector – Welcoming and supporting visitors at the Atrium.

Information & Advice Volunteer – Helping older people access vital support and guidance.

You’re welcome to take on multiple roles if they interest you, and we’ll tailor your volunteering experience to suit you. All roles require a DBS check and training, which we’ll arrange as part of your induction.

Join us in creating an age-friendly community where older people feel connected and supported. We’d love to welcome you to our team!
