Detailed description

Volunteers will assist and support staff to improve the lives of people whose complexity means they are likely to be in hospital for more than a few days. They will be able to spend time with these individuals enabling them to maintain their physical and mental wellbeing. This will include working with the therapy team. Key areas of input will be supporting therapy staff with activity and exercise groups; supporting individuals at mealtimes; enabling individuals to engage in meaningful occupation (including use of puzzles, books, craft activities etc from Occutrolley); and preparing individuals for washing and dressing assessment and practice by ensuring they have the clothing and toiletries they require (from mobile wardrobe). They will need to attend the Trust’s Volunteer Induction session and any relevant training sessions related to this role. This will include mealtime assistance training and manual handling training. Whilst there are no specific qualifications required for this post, the volunteer will need to possess skills of empathy, patience and understanding. 1. Spend time listening and talking to patients, identify favourite activities and escalate any concerns 2. Assist therapy staff in setting up/clearing up group activities and exercise sessions. 3. Assist and support therapy staff in the delivery and teaching of group activities and exercise sessions. 4. Under guidance from therapy staff, work with individuals on a programme of meaningful occupation 5. With appropriate training, assisting at ward mealtimes 6. Maintain inventory of Gym-in-a box and Occutrolley and report back when additional stocks are needed. 7. Under the guidance of therapy staff, accompany individuals to visit other parts of the hospital e.g. hospital garden, league of friends shop. 8. Under guidance of therapy and ward staff, identify individuals requiring items from the Narnia project and enable them to choose appropriate items in preparation for getting washed and dressed. 9. Maintain inventory of Narnia project items and report back when additional stocks are needed. 10. Take part in training related to supporting this service and service users. The list of duties is not exhaustive and the role is expected to expand and evolve as the service develops. EXPECTATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Work with sensitivity and an understanding of the issues facing those working to deliver health care within the Trust 2. Be aware and comply at all times with the content of the Volunteer Services Policy and associated Code of Practice 3. Be aware of and adhere to all Trust policies and protocols highlighted by the Ward/Department Manager as relevant to the volunteer placement 4. In the event of accidents, emergencies or untoward occurrences, respond as directed by the Ward/Department lead. 5. Attend training and department updates as required Seven days a week sessions available, am, pm and eve.
