Summary

A new Community Fridge is coming to Wincanton - volunteers needed to care for it.

Detailed description

The Mayor of Wincanton has secured a Community Fridge for the town, to be located in Coles Yard off the High St.

The idea of a Community Fridge is to stop food that is still good to eat, but has past its sell-by date, from going to waste and being dumped in landfill.

The local supermarkets have got on board to supply the fridge with fruit and vegetables - there will be no meat or eggs - and locals can also top up the fridge if they have surplus food they won't use in time.

ANYONE in the community can help themselves to food from the fridge - the fridge is to stop food going to landfill and isn't about only feeding people who are experiencing financial difficulties, although of course we hope they will use it too. We don't want there to be any stigma attached to taking food from the fridge.

What we are looking is a group of volunteers who will look after the fridge, keep the fridge clean, re-stock it when necessary, and throw out food that is no longer viable to eat. The fridge will need to be looked at every morning and afternoon, 7 days a week.

We hope to recruit a team of volunteers so that each volunteer would only need to take on one or two visits per week, each about 30 minutes long. You can volunteer take on more than two sessions if you want to.

Perhaps you could stop by the fridge after dropping children at school or after collecting them? Or if you work from home, this could be your morning or afternoon walk to stretch your legs and get out.

What will you get out of volunteering? The knowledge that you are doing something positive for the planet - and helping people in community including those most in need. That sense of giving back - it's incredibly good for your mental health!
