Living with mental health needs can make people feel alone and isolated - in many ways. Connecting with someone who understands because they too have been affected by mental health challenges can really help.
As a Peer Mentor you will be linked to individuals with similar challenges and interests. You will undertake an agreed number of mentoring sessions with them, either meeting virtually or over the phone. These sessions will be at a pre-arranged time and each lasting no longer than 1 hour.
What will be involved?
Through conversations and sharing experiences about each others strengths, what helps, whats around in the community you will be supporting people to take steps towards, and achieve, goals they have set.
You will attend a Peer Mentoring Course and Peer Mentor induction specific to your mentor role with Peer Connections.
The Peer Mentor training that you attend will enable you to gain the confidence, skills and knowledge you need to be a mentor and make a difference to someone's life and mental well-being.
You will have ongoing and regular support from the Peer Connections Project Officer and the opportunity to link with other Peer Mentors with Peer Connections as mutual support, share ideas and experiences.
Peer Connections is a new mentoring project covering all areas of Somerset for people affected by mental health challenges to give and receive support. The project aims to help people with their health and well-being, through mutually supportive one-to-one relationships over a period of around three months. We train people with lived experience of mental health challenges who would like to support others as "mentors" and then match them to people who need support to assist with their recovery. Shared lived experience of what works for them, finding ways of achieving individual health and well-being goals.
