About PROMISEworksPROMISEworks recruits, trains, matches, supervises and supports volunteers who provide long-term, inspirational mentoring to some of Somerset’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people.
Volunteers receive four full days of training over a four or five week period
Each child is carefully matched with a volunteer and introductions are made. The children are placed at the centre of the process, having the final word on the suitability or otherwise of their new mentor
The mentee receives a promise that their mentor will be with them for at least two years – a level of stability that many of these young people have never known
The mentor and mentee plan their activities together, usually meeting for two to three hours of quality time each week or two, with activities that might range from a chat over coffee to a walk in the country.
Over time, a rich, trusting relationship is established – often the first that the young person has ever enjoyed
Mentors often get involved in wider aspects of the young person’s life, helping them address issues at home; with their school or college; find employment or navigate their way through officialdom or the criminal justice system
Mentors are supported by regular review meetings with their allocated staff member and are fully reimbursed any expenses
