Summary

Buddies wanted to give support to those with an acquired brain injury, through social activity and contact. Training and ongoing support provided

Detailed description

Making Headway Buddies are a volunteer team providing befriending to break isolation and encourage involvement in the ordinary things of life. Working one to one as a befriender or as part of a small team running social sessions you will make a difference to the life of someone with an acquired brain injury and their family. With your support they can get back to doing the things they enjoy, regain confidence and break out of their isolation.

Our Buddies may meet people in their homes, go on walks with them, take part in activities together, have telephone calls to break up the week. Each person is looking for something individual to them in a Buddy, and you will be carefully matched and given ongoing support. We will arrange and pay for your DBS check.

Interviews and training takes place via Zoom and in person. Next training start dates are May and September 2022.

Volunteers from all backgrounds and across Somerset are welcome. Current Buddies include people looking to go on to careers in health and social care, people retired from a range of jobs who want to keep using their skills to help others, and and those who just want to add something to their life by supporting someone else to achieve their goals.

About Headway Somerset

We provide services and support across Somerset to adults with an acquired brain injury and their families. Our services start at the point an individual is in hospital through our hospital liaison service which provides critical support to individuals and more often to partners and families. Rehabilitation is provided by trained staff and a band of committed volunteers through four centres and can also be delivered through one –to-one outreach. We also have volunteering opportunities for befriending.
