Detailed description

Join our team of miniature railway enthusiasts engaging with East Somerset Railway visitors wishing to ride on the miniature railway which runs alongside part of the main railway line. Full training given. Practical work extending the line also available.


Flexible time commitment. Add your name to the rota when available. The East Somerset Railway is open from mid March to end of October every weekend (and Wednesdays and Thursdays in the summer). The miniature railway does not run when the weather is poor.

Getting there

Signposted off A361 Shepton Mallet to Frome road. 3 miles east of Shepton Mallet. Huge free car par next to station building. Miniature railway on second platform, next to Signal Box.

As well as hands-on, practical work maintaining our railway line and our steam locomotive and Signal Box restoration projects, we require public facing roles during the summer season such as Guards, Travelling Ticket Inspectors, Shop and Ticket Office staff. The ESR is a dynamic and friendly organization that offers flexible time commitment according to your availability, social events, free train rides for you and discounts for your friends and family.
